"Late evening it empties out. The arcade shutters come down and the streetlight pool feels thin. I walk in the middle of the road to feel less cornered."

After closing hours the street loses every eye and every reason to linger — a corridor rather than a place.

Potential problems

  • Closed shopfronts remove passive surveillance after dark
  • Lighting is sparse and cold-spectrum
  • Nothing to do and nowhere to wait

Design interventions

  • Warm-spectrum lighting at eye level
  • One or two late-opening kiosks
  • A small lit pocket of fixed seating near the transit stop

"Crossing here on foot feels like a negotiation you always lose. The crossing phase is short, cars turn across the crosswalk, and the noise at your elbow is constant. I cross fast and hold my breath."

From voice: "Crossing here feels like a negotiation you always lose. The light is too short and the noise is constant. I cross fast and hold my breath."

The junction treats pedestrians as an obstacle: short phases, turning conflicts and traffic noise create a constant low-level threat state.

Potential problems

  • Pedestrian signal phase too short for the crossing width
  • Turning vehicles conflict with people mid-crossing
  • No refuge for slower pedestrians

Design interventions

  • Lengthen the walk phase and add a leading pedestrian interval
  • Add a planted median refuge
  • Buffer the arcade setback with planting and seating
